**Lucknow, India** – The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board), India’s largest examination board, has dramatically reformed its operations, resulting in significantly faster results and a crackdown on widespread cheating. This year, the board released high school and intermediate examination results in a record 43 days, with pass percentages of 90.11% and 81.15% respectively. This is a stark contrast to the board’s past reputation for mass copying and delayed results.
The transformation is attributed to a multi-pronged approach. Key measures include:
* **Technological upgrades:** Increased use of technology and CCTV cameras in examination centers.
* **Stricter anti-copying measures:** A renewed crackdown on the “copying mafia,” including the use of the Anti-Copying Act of 1992, which makes cheating a non-bailable offense.
* **Streamlined exam process:** Reduction of the examination period from a month to 13 working days.
* **Enhanced examination center security:** Use of only government and aided schools as exam centers, and videography of answer sheet seal openings. The involvement of the Special Task Force further deterred cheating.
Former state education ministers, including Rajnath Singh (who introduced the Anti-Copying Act) and Dinesh Sharma (who implemented key reforms under the Yogi Adityanath government), highlighted the significant efforts involved in tackling the deeply entrenched problem of exam malpractice.
While the number of students registering for the exams has slightly decreased in recent years to over 54 lakh in 2025, from a peak of over 66 lakh in 2018, the board’s improvements have led to increased confidence and popularity among students and parents. The UP Board, established in 1921, has grown from 5,744 students in its first examination to over 5 million today, solidifying its position as one of the world’s largest examination bodies. The board attributes its success to a combination of stringent anti-cheating measures and the adoption of modern technology. The significant turnaround showcases the board’s commitment to fair and efficient examination practices.
