**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala –** The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has launched a major sanitation drive following the death of a 63-year-old man from cholera. Ajai Chandran, a Kowdiar resident, passed away on Sunday, April 27th, prompting the Corporation’s health wing to initiate disease surveillance and intensified cleaning operations in the affected ward.
According to Kowdiar ward councillor S. Santhikumari, ASHA workers are conducting door-to-door surveys, querying residents about symptoms like fever and diarrhea. Water samples have been collected and sent for testing. Fogging operations have also been stepped up. While Ajai Chandran was initially hospitalized at a private hospital for fever and diarrhea, the subsequent cholera diagnosis triggered the response.
Although a public health official stated there are currently no signs of a wider outbreak, they advised caution and indicated an upcoming advisory urging residents experiencing similar symptoms to stay hydrated with oral rehydration salts. The official’s statement echoes a 2024 World Health Organisation report linking the recent rise in cholera deaths to climate change and inadequate sanitation. The District Medical Officer was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
