**Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh –** Fisherfolk in Andhra Pradesh’s Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district are set to receive training in seaweed cultivation thanks to a grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Forty self-help groups (SHGs) will participate in the initiative, which aims to create a sustainable livelihood for the community while meeting the growing demand for seaweed in various industries.
District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar announced the project Monday, stating that suitable brackish water locations along the coast have been identified for seaweed farming. The seaweed will be used in aqua feed, fodder, and cosmetics. The Collector also called for an action plan to explore additional funding sources, including the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Fund and local banks. The project is being coordinated with the AP Pollution Control Board and District Rural Development Authority. Training will be provided by experts from Ramanadhapuram, Tamil Nadu.
