Sat Apr 26 16:42:52 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan and Bangladesh Aim to Strengthen Ties Amidst Historical Tensions

**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, has expressed his country’s desire to deepen its engagement with Bangladesh across various sectors. This statement follows a recent Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) between the two nations, the first in nearly 15 years, which saw discussions on economic, political, and cultural cooperation.

The FOC, held in Dhaka, saw Bangladesh raise “historically unresolved issues,” including demanding a public apology from Pakistan for the 1971 atrocities and compensation of $4.3 billion. Despite these significant historical grievances, both sides emphasized their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

Minister Asif, speaking at a reception celebrating Bangladesh’s Independence Day, highlighted the historical ties between the two countries and stressed the importance of enhanced development cooperation. Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Muhammad Iqbal Hussain Khan, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the desire for strong and friendly ties.

The positive statements come amidst a period of fluctuating relations. While the FOC represents a thaw following the ouster of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last August, a planned visit by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been postponed due to rising tensions between Pakistan and India. This postponement underscores the complex regional dynamics impacting relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
