Sat Apr 26 20:55:00 UTC 2025: ## Meghalaya to Host First Annual Strawberry Festival

**GUWAHATI, INDIA (April 27, 2025)** – Meghalaya will host its inaugural two-day Strawberry Festival on May 2nd and 3rd, showcasing the state’s burgeoning strawberry industry and promoting agro-tourism. The festival, organized by Meghalayan Age Limited in collaboration with the state’s Tourism and Agriculture Departments, will take place simultaneously in three locations: Syntung (East Khasi Hills), Sohliya (Ri-Bhoi district), and Darechigre (West Garo Hills), all areas experiencing significant growth in strawberry cultivation.

The festival will offer visitors a variety of activities, including strawberry picking, workshops on jam-making and baking, and live musical performances by local artists. Adventure activities such as cycling and trekking through farms, along with glamping opportunities, will also be available. Attendees can sample locally-produced strawberry products, such as wines, jams, ice creams, and traditional cakes. Educational sessions on traditional winemaking, beverages, and organic farming methods are also planned.

The initiative follows a 2023 government program to boost strawberry cultivation through the distribution of saplings and planting materials. This resulted in a record 1,220 metric tonnes of strawberries produced in 2024, a 24-metric-tonne increase from the previous year. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed his desire to further expand strawberry cultivation to improve the lives of farmers and the rural economy. The festival aims to highlight the potential of agro-tourism to stimulate rural livelihoods and celebrate Meghalaya’s rich culture.
