Sat Apr 26 19:21:30 UTC 2025: ## Delhi’s Air Quality Monitoring Stations Spark Political Row

**New Delhi, April 27, 2025** – A political spat has erupted in Delhi over the proposed locations of six new air quality monitoring stations. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the opposition party, accuses the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately choosing sites with low pollution levels – namely JNU, IGNOU, Netaji Subhash University (West Campus), Central Ridge, Delhi Cantonment, and the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex – to artificially lower the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI).

AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj claims the BJP is trying to “fool people” by installing the stations in areas with dense vegetation, where pollution is naturally lower than in other parts of the city. He alleges this is a deliberate attempt to manipulate the AQI readings.

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa refuted these claims, stating that the locations were chosen by the previous AAP government. He accused the AAP of spreading lies and attributed the improved air quality to the BJP’s efforts. Sirsa’s statement on X (formerly Twitter) characterized the AAP’s accusations as unchanging behavior, regardless of whether they are in power or opposition.

The AQI, a scale of 0-500 measuring air pollution, is a key indicator of Delhi’s environmental health. A higher AQI signifies greater toxicity. The controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the accuracy and representation of air quality data in the city.
