Thu Apr 24 15:39:47 UTC 2025: ## New App Promises Safer Metro Travel for Women in Hyderabad
**Hyderabad, India (April 24, 2025)** – A new mobile application, TUTEM (Technologies for Urban Transit to Enhance Mobility and Safe Accessibility), is set to launch in Hyderabad, offering enhanced safety features for women using the city’s metro system. Developed in collaboration with the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR), BITS Pilani-Hyderabad, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, and Hyderabad Police, with funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the app aims to address safety concerns surrounding public transport.
The app features both a “Driver App” and a “User App,” designed to ensure safe travel not just on the metro, but also during pre- and post-journey commutes, including walking, using two-wheelers, cars, buses, or auto-rickshaws. A key safety feature allows users to instantly alert police, family, and friends if they feel unsafe at any point.
HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy emphasized the importance of technological solutions in tackling traffic congestion and improving public safety, particularly for women. He highlighted the app’s potential to significantly improve the travel experience for the nearly half a million people who use the metro daily. The app incorporates features specifically designed for late-night travel safety.
The initiative has drawn support from various institutions and experts, indicating a commitment to expanding the app’s reach to other cities in the future. The launch follows Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s directives on enhancing public safety.
