**New Delhi, April 23, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to win the upcoming Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) mayoral elections unopposed, following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) withdrawal from the race. BJP candidate Raja Iqbal Singh will run for Mayor, and Jai Bhagwan Yadav for Deputy Mayor.
The AAP’s decision comes less than three months after their defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections and follows a period of political instability within the MCD. After winning the MCD elections in December 2022, AAP lost its majority due to several councillors switching to the BJP. The BJP now holds 116 seats compared to AAP’s 114 in the 250-member house.
Mr. Yadav, the BJP’s candidate for Deputy Mayor, stated that their priorities include addressing the city’s cleanliness issues and resolving the impasse regarding the MCD’s Standing Committee. The committee, responsible for approving projects over ₹5 crore, has been stalled since September 2024 due to a Supreme Court case filed by the AAP. The BJP plans to withdraw this petition upon winning the election.
The BJP also intends to address stalled projects, including the renewal of private sanitation contracts. Following the mayoral elections, the party will reportedly begin preparations for upcoming by-elections necessitated by councillors who have taken up positions in the state assembly and Lok Sabha.
