SRINAGAR, INDIA—A horrific terrorist attack in the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has left at least 26 tourists dead and numerous others injured. The attack, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, saw terrorists open fire on picnicking tourists in the Baisaran area, known as the “mini Switzerland” of Pahalgam.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and terror, with women screaming for help as loved ones lay injured or dead. Distressing videos circulating on social media show victims pleading for medical assistance amidst blood and panic. One woman was recorded saying her husband had been shot while they were enjoying a snack.
The victims include tourists from several Indian states, including Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Haryana, and Karnataka. Among the deceased are a Navy officer, an Intelligence Bureau officer, and a realtor from Karnataka who was reportedly shot in front of his family. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the deaths of two tourists from Maharashtra.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling the perpetrators “animals” and stating it was the largest attack on civilians in recent years. He confirmed that hospital arrangements were being made for the injured.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the launch of an anti-terror operation to neutralize the attackers. In response to the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his trip to Saudi Arabia and is expected to arrive in Delhi early Wednesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already arrived in Srinagar to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts. The death toll remains subject to change, as several critically injured tourists are receiving medical attention.
