Tue Apr 22 20:49:00 UTC 2025: ## Coastal Groynes Cause New Problems for Tamil Nadu Fishermen
**Chennai, April 23, 2025** – Newly constructed groynes intended to protect the coast of Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu from erosion are instead creating difficulties for local fishermen, according to reports. While the structures offer temporary erosion relief, they have disrupted natural sediment flow, leading to silting and hindering boat access.
Fishermen from villages like Karikattukuppam in Muttukadu report that the groynes’ design is unsuitable for local conditions. Surya, a local fisherman, stated that improper construction has caused silting near the shore, making it hard for boats to land. Villagers have temporarily addressed this by piling beach sand further inland, but this is not a sustainable solution.
Senthil, another fisherman, criticized the groynes’ angle and placement, suggesting that the structures should be positioned to minimize interference with boat movement. He also highlighted the lack of consultation with fishermen, whose local knowledge could have prevented these issues. He further pointed out that the use of tetrapods was not optimal and created significant safety hazards during rough seas.
The incident underscores concerns about the potential negative impacts of coastal protection measures if not properly designed and implemented with local community input. The Fisheries Department has yet to respond to these concerns.
