Tue Apr 22 14:41:46 UTC 2025: ## Long-Awaited Salem Museum Nears Opening
**Salem, Tamil Nadu, April 22, 2025** – After years of operating from rented spaces, Salem district’s government museum is finally set to open its doors in a brand new building. Construction of the ₹5 crore facility in Hasthampatti is nearing completion, with only minor finishing touches remaining.
The museum, first established in 1976, boasts a diverse collection spanning sculptures from the Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara periods, ancient weapons, musical instruments, paintings, and hero stones depicting local history. Notable artifacts include a 12th-century Parsvanatha sculpture and items from the Old and New Stone Ages sourced from the Shevroyan and Kolli Hills.
The lack of a permanent building led to three previous relocations, prompting repeated public and historian requests for a dedicated facility. The Tamil Nadu government approved the project in 2023.
Public Works Department (PWD) officials confirmed the main construction is finished. The Museum Department has requested permission to move the exhibits, and officials anticipate the museum will open within two weeks of approval. Residents eagerly await the museum’s opening, hoping to finally access this significant piece of Salem’s cultural heritage in a fitting permanent home.
