**Mumbai, April 22, 2025** – An all-girls Indian team achieved a landmark victory at the 14th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2025, held in Prishtina, Kosovo from April 11-17. The team secured two silver and two bronze medals, placing 12th overall amongst at least 50 participating countries.
This is a significant accomplishment, marking India’s rise in international mathematical competitions. Silver medals were won by Sanjana Chacko (16) from Kerala and Shreya Mundhada (15) from Mumbai, while Saee Patil (18) from Pune and Shreya Gupta Ray (18) from Kolkata secured bronze. The team was led by Dr. Mrudul Thatte from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).
Arnab Bhattacharya, a Central Director of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), highlighted the importance of this win, stating that it “inspires girls and builds confidence that they can compete with the world.” He noted the significance of India achieving this level of success after three decades of participation.
The HBCSE-TIFR, under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), played a crucial role in identifying and training the team. A spokesperson attributed the success to dedicated past medalists, structured training provided through the EGMO Training Camp, and continuous support from the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and DAE. The EGMO aims to encourage young women to pursue careers in science and increase female representation in international mathematics competitions.
