**Santiago, Chile –** A Chinese-owned hydroelectric plant under construction in Chile was the target of a violent attack on Sunday. Gunmen set fire to 45 trucks and five pieces of heavy equipment at the Rucalhue power plant, injuring two security guards. The plant, a $350 million project by a subsidiary of China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), is located 550 kilometers south of Santiago along the Biobio River.
The attack, described as “terrorist” in nature by Chilean Security Minister Luis Cordero, has been condemned by China’s foreign ministry. Spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that China is working with Chilean authorities to investigate and ensure the safety of Chinese projects and personnel in the country. Indigenous groups have previously voiced opposition to the plant, citing environmental concerns. The cost of the damage is currently being assessed by Rucalhue Energia Spa.
