Tue Apr 22 11:08:02 UTC 2025: ## Mysuru Launches Investigation into Felling of 40 Trees for Road Widening
**Mysuru, Karnataka, April 22, 2025** – A three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the felling of 40 mature trees on Hyder Ali Road in Mysuru to make way for a road-widening project. The decision, announced by Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, follows widespread public outrage and protests from citizens, NGOs, and environmental groups.
The committee, chaired by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Commissioner, will investigate the necessity of the road widening, the justification for removing the trees, the acquisition of necessary permits, and compliance with relevant regulations. The Deputy Conservator of Forests, Hunsur, and the Executive Engineer of the District Urban Development and Planning Department will serve as a member and secretary, respectively. The committee is mandated to submit its report within seven days.
The controversial tree felling, which occurred near the Superintendent of Police’s office, sparked daily protests, including a large candlelight vigil and symbolic replanting of saplings by residents. The incident has drawn strong criticism, with environmentalists questioning the project’s necessity and the justification for sacrificing the green cover.
Adding to the pressure, the Minister for Forest and Environment, Eshwar Khandre, has ordered a separate investigation into the matter. The public outcry highlights growing concerns over environmental protection and urban development planning in Mysuru.
