**Madurai, Tamil Nadu –** The AIADMK women’s wing staged a protest in Madurai on Monday, demanding the arrest and dismissal of Tamil Nadu Forests Minister K. Ponmudy. The protest follows a public speech by Mr. Ponmudy containing derogatory remarks against women.
State secretary and former Minister B. Valarmathi led the demonstration, criticizing Mr. Ponmudy’s comments and alleging a pattern of such behavior from the ruling DMK party. Ms. Valarmathi cited the 1989 attack on Jayalalithaa in the Tamil Nadu Assembly under M. Karunanidhi’s chief ministership as evidence of the DMK’s history of disrespect towards women.
The protest highlighted the Madras High Court’s questioning of the lack of an FIR against Mr. Ponmudy, as well as widespread condemnation from women’s organizations and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Ms. Valarmathi questioned Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s silence on the issue, suggesting his inaction constitutes tacit approval of Mr. Ponmudy’s remarks.
Hundreds of women participated in the protest, chanting slogans condemning both Mr. Ponmudy and the DMK. Former Minister Sellur K. Raju and other senior party officials were also present.
