Mon Apr 21 11:50:08 UTC 2025: ## BJP Poised to Win Delhi Mayoral Election as AAP Abstains
**New Delhi, April 21, 2025** – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced it will not contest the upcoming Delhi mayoral elections, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poised for a victory. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta attributed the AAP’s decision to a loss of public faith and internal dissatisfaction within the party.
The mayoral election, scheduled for April 25th, will see the BJP fielding Raja Iqbal Singh and Jai Bhagwan Yadav for mayor and deputy mayor respectively. The BJP currently claims a council strength of 117, bolstered by defections from the AAP following the 2022 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. With the addition of nominated MLAs and Lok Sabha MPs eligible to vote, the BJP’s victory appears assured.
AAP leader Atishi accused the BJP of rigging the 2022 MCD elections and subsequently poaching AAP councillors. However, Chief Minister Gupta countered that the AAP’s own unpopular policies had eroded its support base. The AAP’s decision to abstain from the election is speculated to be a strategic move to prevent a further exodus of its disgruntled councillors to the BJP.
The BJP is confident of a win, emphasizing the strength of its position and its promise of “triple engine governance” for Delhi’s development.
