Sun Apr 20 10:41:05 UTC 2025: ## BJP MP Faces Potential Contempt Charges for Supreme Court Criticism

**New Delhi, April 20, 2025** – A Supreme Court lawyer has requested the Attorney General’s permission to initiate contempt proceedings against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for his strongly critical remarks against the Supreme Court. Dubey’s comments, made a day earlier, included accusations that the court should be held responsible for civil wars and a suggestion that Parliament and state assemblies should close if the court were to make laws.

The lawyer, Anas Tanveer, argued in his letter to Attorney General R. Venkatramani that Dubey’s statements were “grossly scandalous, misleading, and aimed at lowering the dignity and authority” of the Supreme Court. He cited relevant sections of the Contempt of Courts Act in his request.

Dubey’s remarks followed the central government’s assurance to the court regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Act, promising not to implement certain provisions until the next hearing.

The BJP has distanced itself from Dubey’s comments, with party president J.P. Nadda stating that the views were personal and not reflective of the party’s position. Nadda emphasized the BJP’s respect for the judiciary and stated he had instructed party leaders against making similar remarks.
