LUCKNOW, INDIA – April 18, 2025 – The Uttar Pradesh police have cleared Sambhal Circle Officer Anuj Choudhary of any wrongdoing following allegations of inappropriate remarks made during Holi and Eid celebrations. However, the exoneration has sparked controversy, with former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur criticizing the state government for allegedly shielding the officer.
Mr. Thakur, who filed the complaint, claims the inquiry report ignored “ample evidence” showing Mr. Choudhary violated Police Conduct Rules. He alleges that the report, which cited statements from two individuals attesting to a peaceful situation, overlooked the officer’s controversial statement made at a peace committee meeting on March 6th. Mr. Choudhary reportedly advised Muslim residents to remain indoors during Holi celebrations to avoid having colors on their clothes before Friday prayers. This statement drew widespread criticism.
While the inquiry, conducted by SP (Law and Order) Manoj Kumar Awasthi, found no credible evidence of wrongdoing, Mr. Thakur accuses senior officials of supporting Mr. Choudhary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of protecting him in violation of his constitutional oath. Mr. Choudhary maintains his remarks were misrepresented for political gain. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath previously defended the officer, suggesting his comments might have been made informally. The controversy continues to fuel debate over religious sensitivity and the impartiality of investigations within the Uttar Pradesh police force.
