HYDERABAD, April 18, 2025 – A sudden and intense thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy winds and hail in some areas, caused widespread disruption across Hyderabad on Friday evening. The downpour, which lasted approximately an hour, followed an unexpectedly humid day and caught residents unprepared.
Areas such as Bandlaguda, Bahadurpura, Charminar, and Nampally experienced the heaviest rainfall, with Bandlaguda recording over 8 centimeters. Significant waterlogging was reported across the city, affecting major roads including Bahadurpura crossroads, Chintalkunta, and Rajbhavan Road. The Begumpet Metro station briefly closed due to flooding.
The storm also brought down over 60 trees across various localities, leading to traffic snarls and power outages. The Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), along with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and traffic police, worked to clear fallen trees and address waterlogging issues. Despite it being a holiday, traffic was severely impacted.
Social media posts from residents highlighted the unexpected nature of the storm and the severity of the flooding and hail in some areas. The intense rainfall caused significant inconvenience to commuters and residents across the city.
