Thu Apr 17 08:21:37 UTC 2025: ## Mangalore Rail Overbridge Project Makes Progress: 30 Meters of Girder Installed
**Mangaluru, April 17, 2025** – The construction of an additional rail-over-bridge (RoB) on National Highway 169A near Indrali in Udupi is progressing, with the Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) successfully pushing a 30-meter section of a steel bow-string bridge girder across the Mangaluru-Mumbai railway line.
The 476-tonne girder, measuring 12 meters wide and 58 meters long, began its movement on April 15th and has been advanced inch-by-inch using hydraulic jacks and other specialized equipment. The process, moving at approximately 2 meters per hour, is expected to be completed by the end of April, pending final approvals.
Engineers from the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) have already inspected the assembled bridge, and experts from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways are scheduled to conduct their own assessment beginning April 21st. This evaluation is anticipated to take a week.
The project, initiated in 2018, faced significant delays due to design changes and bureaucratic hurdles, leading to numerous accidents on the previously congested two-lane section of the highway. The intervention of local MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Kota Srinivas Poojary helped expedite the process.
Once the girder placement is complete, concrete will be laid, and the RoB is expected to be commissioned shortly thereafter. The total project cost is estimated at ₹9 crore.
