Wed Apr 16 23:10:21 UTC 2025: ## Iran-US Nuclear Talks Resume in Rome Amidst Political Shifts

**Dubai, UAE -** The next round of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States will take place in Rome this weekend, Iranian state television confirmed Wednesday. This follows earlier uncertainty regarding the location, with Iran initially reversing its agreement to hold talks in Rome before reaffirming the location. Oman will again mediate the discussions.

The announcement coincided with the acceptance of the resignation of Iranian Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif, a key negotiator in the 2015 nuclear deal. President Masoud Pezeshkian praised Zarif but cited unspecified issues preventing continued collaboration. Zarif’s resignation, while previously tendered in March, was only now formally accepted. Mohsen Ismaili, described as a political moderate, will replace Zarif.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Mariano Grossi arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for meetings likely to address IAEA access to Iranian nuclear facilities. These meetings are crucial as any new agreement would require verification mechanisms. Despite tensions, IAEA access hasn’t been completely revoked.

The high stakes of the negotiations were underscored by President Trump’s repeated threats of airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear program if a deal isn’t reached, and Iranian warnings about pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran currently enriches uranium to near weapons-grade levels.

Adding to the complexity, conflicting statements from US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff regarding the terms of a potential deal have prompted a warning from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi against contradictory stances. Araghchi stressed that Iran’s right to enrich uranium is non-negotiable. Witkoff’s conflicting statements on whether a new deal would necessitate a return to 3.67% uranium enrichment or would strictly adhere to Trump’s mandate have increased tensions further.
