Thu Apr 17 05:51:48 UTC 2025: **Maharashtra Makes Hindi Mandatory in Primary Schools**
Mumbai, April 17, 2025 – The Maharashtra school education department announced that Hindi will become a mandatory third language in all Marathi and English-medium schools from classes 1 to 5. This decision implements the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s new curriculum framework, which will be phased in. Currently, only Marathi and English are mandatory in classes 1 to 4.
The government resolution, issued on April 16th, states that the three-language formula, already in place for non-Marathi and non-English medium schools, will be extended. The NEP 2020’s 5+3+3+4 structure will be adopted, encompassing foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary education levels.
The state board syllabus will be based on the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) framework, incorporating local context in subjects like history, geography, and languages. The new curriculum emphasizes inclusiveness, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability in education. The implementation will begin with Grade 1 in the upcoming academic year.
