**MARQUETTE, MI** – Upper Michigan residents are urged to prepare for hazardous weather conditions as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the region Monday night through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a First Alert Weather Day for Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, and western Marquette counties.
Heavy wet snow, strong winds gusting 35-45 mph, and dangerously sloppy road conditions are forecast. Snow accumulation is predicted to range from 1-3 inches along Lake Superior, 4-6 inches in the western and northern Upper Peninsula, and potentially 6-10 inches in higher elevations. Lake-effect snow will exacerbate conditions in the northern Upper Peninsula.
The hazardous weather is expected to persist through Tuesday noon, with snow tapering off in the east by Tuesday evening. Travel is strongly discouraged during this period.
Following the storm, warmer spring-like temperatures and sunny breaks are anticipated on Wednesday. However, another system is expected to bring rain and potential thunderstorms Thursday evening into Friday. The weekend forecast includes a mix of rain and snow Saturday morning, transitioning to sunny skies in the afternoon. More rain is expected Sunday night into Monday.
