Tue Apr 15 16:06:28 UTC 2025: **Ramanathapuram Holds Public Hearing on Waterbody Rejuvenation**
Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, April 15, 2025 – A public hearing was held in Ramanathapuram on Tuesday to discuss the rejuvenation, management, and protection of 23 waterbodies in the district. The hearing, organized by the district administration, saw demands for the removal of encroachments and desilting of waterways.
Suba Nagarajan, a former BJP municipal councillor, highlighted the need to clear blockages in the waterways connected to the fifth sluice of Periya Kanmai. He proposed extending a pipeline system to efficiently distribute water from Lakshmana oorani to over 10 other smaller waterbodies in the area. He noted that even during water shortages, this system could effectively utilize water from the Vaigai river.
D. Raju, State coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi, criticized the lack of publicity surrounding the public hearing, claiming insufficient advertisement and limited media coverage. He also urged the district administration to enforce court orders mandating the removal of encroachments on waterbodies. The hearing underscored the community’s concerns about water resource management and the need for effective implementation of rejuvenation plans.
