Tue Apr 15 03:30:00 UTC 2025: **Padres’ Center Field in Crisis After Double Hamstring Injury**

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres are facing a center field crisis after placing both Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge on the injured list with hamstring strains within a week. The team has called up utility player Tyler Wade to fill the void, but manager Mike Shildt acknowledged the need for additional depth at the position.

While versatile players like Wade and Jason Heyward (who has experience in center) will share duties, the Padres have ruled out shifting star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. to center. Tatis, a 2023 Platinum Glove winner, is considered a valuable asset in right field, and the team believes moving him would disrupt their defensive strength. Furthermore, Tatis’s recent recovery from a leg injury also factors into the decision.

Connor Joe, recently promoted from Triple-A, is another option, though he is primarily a first baseman and corner outfielder.

The Padres remain optimistic about the relatively short-term nature of the injuries. Lockridge’s injury is considered mild, with a possible return by month’s end. Merrill’s return, however, remains unclear, as he has yet to resume full baseball activities. Until their return, the Padres will rely on a patchwork solution in center field.
