**Washington, D.C.** – A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to revoke the legal status and work permits of over 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. These migrants entered the U.S. under the Biden administration’s controversial CHNV program, a humanitarian parole initiative allowing entry for those with U.S. sponsors.
Judge Indira Talwani, an Obama appointee, ruled that each migrant requires an individualized review before their parole status can be revoked. The ruling stays the Trump administration’s order, which aimed to cancel the parole and work permits granted under the CHNV program.
The CHNV program, initially launched for Venezuelans and later expanded, was designed to reduce illegal border crossings. However, it was temporarily paused following reports of widespread fraud and several recipients’ arrests for serious crimes.
The Trump administration’s attempt to reverse the program via executive order has been met with strong criticism. A Trump administration official called the judge’s decision “pure lawless tyranny,” arguing that it prevents the administration from using the same executive authority employed by the Biden administration to create the CHNV program. The migrants were initially given until April 24th to leave the country.
Newly confirmed DHS Secretary Kristi Noem appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss the administration’s immigration crackdown efforts, including the decision regarding Venezuelan migrants and recent ICE raids in New York City. The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment.
