**New Delhi, April 14, 2025** – The Indian Consumer Affairs Ministry announced new draft rules mandating testing, verification, and stamping of all gas meters used domestically, commercially, and industrially. These rules, framed under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, aim to ensure accurate gas measurement and protect consumers from faulty or manipulated devices.
The Ministry stated that verified and stamped meters will prevent overcharging or under-measurement, leading to fairer billing and improved energy efficiency. The new regulations also promise reduced consumer disputes and maintenance costs.
The rules establish a compliance framework aligned with international best practices and International Organisation of Legal Metrology standards. This move is intended to boost India’s credibility in international trade and encourage innovation within the domestic manufacturing sector.
A technical committee, including representatives from the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM), industry experts, and consumer organizations, developed the draft rules. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) also provided scientific and technical input. The Ministry claims the draft was widely circulated for stakeholder feedback before finalization. The new rules are expected to come into effect soon.
