**Muscat, Oman –** U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that indirect talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program are progressing positively, stating, “I think they’re going OK.” While offering cautious optimism, he emphasized the importance of concrete results before making further pronouncements. These comments follow a high-level meeting in Muscat, Oman, mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the talks, involving U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, were constructive and yielded a potential basis for further negotiations. He noted that both sides desire a swift but realistic agreement, requiring mutual concessions. Mr. Araghchi highlighted that the U.S. expressed a desire for a deal “as soon as possible.” The negotiators also held brief direct conversations.
A White House statement echoed the positive tone, describing the discussions as “very positive and constructive” and characterizing the direct communication as a significant step forward.
The talks mark the highest-level engagement between the U.S. and Iran on this issue since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal, which President Trump abandoned in 2018. The indirect nature of the discussions, with the Omani minister acting as an intermediary, reflects the long-standing lack of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Iran, facing economic strain and regional pressures, is seeking sanctions relief, while the U.S. aims to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Further talks are scheduled for next Saturday.
