**New Delhi, India** – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun the interrogation of Tahawwur Rana, the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, following his extradition from the United States. A 12-member NIA team, led by DIG Jaya Roy and IG Ashish Batra, both senior IPS officers instrumental in securing Rana’s extradition, is spearheading the investigation.
Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-Canadian businessman, was extradited on Thursday and placed in NIA custody for 18 days. He is accused of conspiring with David Coleman Headley and operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI) to carry out the attacks that killed 166 people. Charges against Rana include conspiracy, murder, commission of a terrorist act, and forgery.
The NIA has indicated to a Delhi court that its investigation will explore whether Rana planned further attacks on other Indian cities. They intend to confront Rana with substantial evidence and believe his statements will uncover additional details about the conspiracy and his links to other terrorists involved in the Mumbai attacks.
DIG Roy, a 2011 batch IPS officer with a background in medicine, joined the NIA in 2019. Her previous work includes a significant crackdown on cybercriminals in Jharkhand, which inspired a web series. IG Batra, a 1997 batch IPS officer, also joined the NIA in 2019 and previously led the Jharkhand Jaguar anti-insurgency unit. Both officers’ expertise will be crucial in this high-profile investigation.
