Guntur, Andhra Pradesh – The Andhra Pradesh Livestock Development Agency (APLDA) is aggressively promoting artificial insemination using sex-sorted semen technology to significantly increase the number of female calves born, thereby boosting milk production and the income of dairy farmers. Initial results have been highly encouraging, with over 90% of calves born female following 123,677 inseminations.

Dr. M. Srinivasa Rao, CEO of APLDA, announced plans to conduct 400,000 inseminations using this technology this year, targeting at least 10% of the state’s breedable cattle population. The goal is to eventually replace conventional semen with sex-sorted semen within five years, a transition that will be aided by the development of indigenous sex-sorting technology, reducing production costs.

Dr. Rao highlighted the transformative potential of this technology, projecting a doubling of dairy farmers’ income within two to three years due to increased milk production and the higher number of female calves. The initiative, supported by both the central and state governments under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, aims to increase animal wealth in rural areas.

The program focuses on selecting 35-40 “elite” animals per district from interested farmers. This targeted approach, along with subsidized semen straws, aims to increase female calf births and subsequent milk production. Farmers can register eligible animals for the program, and a range of breeds will be available. The APLDA is confident that this technology will revolutionize the dairy sector in Andhra Pradesh.
