**Mumbai, April 13, 2025** – Vishal Gawli (35), accused of the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Kalyan, Thane, allegedly died by suicide at Taloja Central Jail early Sunday morning. Gawli was found hanging in a prison toilet around 3:30 a.m., using a towel. Authorities conducted a spot inspection and sent his body to J.J. Hospital in Mumbai for a post-mortem.

Gawli and his wife, Sakshi, were arrested in December 2024 following the girl’s disappearance and subsequent discovery of her body. The Kalyan police filed a 948-page chargesheet against the couple in February, accusing Gawli of the rape and murder and Sakshi of assisting in disposing of the body. The December 2024 incident sparked public outrage and calls for justice. The case was investigated under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
