Sun Apr 13 06:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Ari Aster’s “Eddington” to Premiere at Cannes, Says Cinematographer Darius Khondji

**Doha, Qatar –** Acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji has revealed details about Ari Aster’s upcoming film, “Eddington,” ahead of its anticipated Cannes Film Festival premiere. Khondji, speaking after a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra lab, confirmed the film’s selection for the festival, expressing hope for a spot in the main Competition.

“Eddington,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone alongside Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Michael Ward, is described by Khondji as “very different from [Aster’s] other movies.” He praised Aster’s filmmaking prowess, drawing comparisons to Ingmar Bergman and Roman Polanski. The film, shot a year ago in New Mexico, features a unique 1.85:1 aspect ratio, a deliberate choice against industry norms, according to Khondji.

Khondji, who will begin the film’s digital intermediate process in a few days with colorist Yvan Lucas, also teased another upcoming project: Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet. He described the film, which features 140 characters and a small role by Philippe Petit, as “unlike anything at the moment.”

Khondji’s masterclass also touched upon his views on digital filmmaking, expressing concerns about over-digitization and the potential pitfalls of digital intermediate. He voiced a preference for film, highlighting its textural qualities and its impact on skin tones. He also expressed strong dislike for 3D and IMAX, with exceptions made only for certain films. The cinematographer concluded that he would be open to working on another musical in the future. Both “Eddington” and “Marty Supreme” are A24 productions.
