Sat Apr 12 17:21:05 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Report Recommends Ending Creamy Layer Exemption for Certain Castes
**Bengaluru, April 12, 2025** – A Socio Economic and Education Survey report has recommended removing the creamy layer exemption for castes currently benefiting from reservation in Karnataka. The K. Jayaprakash Hegde Commission, which submitted the report in 2024, cites increased economic prosperity and political influence within these groups as justification. The report notes that some individuals from these castes have become millionaires and achieved prominent political positions.
This recommendation stems from observations of heightened competition for resources, disadvantaging those from rural areas and lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The report defends exceeding the Supreme Court’s 50% reservation cap, highlighting that existing reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) have already pushed the total to 56%. The report further points out that Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand have even higher reservation percentages, at 69% and 77% respectively. The report’s findings are expected to spark significant debate on reservation policies in India.
