**New Delhi, April 12, 2025** – India’s widely used Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system experienced a significant disruption this Saturday, marking the third major outage in less than a month. The breakdown, affecting both individuals and businesses nationwide, left millions unable to make digital transactions via popular apps like Google Pay and Paytm.
DownDetector reported over 1,168 complaints by the afternoon, with Google Pay and Paytm users accounting for a significant portion of the reported issues. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, acknowledged “intermittent technical issues” leading to transaction failures, stating they were working to resolve the problem. While the exact cause remains unknown, the recurring nature of these outages raises concerns about the system’s stability.
This latest incident follows previous outages on April 2nd (514 complaints on DownDetector) and March 26th (over 3,000 complaints). The April 2nd disruption saw reported fluctuations in bank success rates and increased latency, while the March 26th outage impacted service for several hours. The frequency of these disruptions underscores the growing reliance on UPI and the potential impact of widespread service failures on the Indian economy. The NPCI has pledged to provide updates as the situation develops.
