**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Sunny Deol’s latest action-thriller, “Jaat,” experienced a significant drop in box office collections on its second day. After a promising opening day of Rs 9.5 crore, the film earned an estimated Rs 7 crore on Friday, bringing its two-day total to Rs 16.5 crore in India. This decline is attributed to a reduction in both theatre screenings and audience turnout.
The film, directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, saw a decrease of over 400 shows across India, including significant cuts in major cities like Mumbai and Delhi-NCR. While the film’s Hindi occupancy was 14.28% on Thursday, it fell to 11.19% on Friday. This drop extends to South Indian markets, where “Jaat” aimed to replicate the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s pan-India hit “Jawan.” However, the reduction in showings in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai suggests a similar fate to other recent Bollywood attempts at emulating South Indian cinematic styles.
Despite starring alongside Randeep Hooda, Ramya Krishnan, and Jagapathi Babu, “Jaat” hasn’t matched the explosive opening of Deol’s recent blockbuster, “Gadar 2,” which raked in Rs 41 crore on its first day. The film also features Saiyami Kher, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Zarina Wahab. Deol’s future projects include “Lahore 1947” and a sequel to his iconic film “Border.” The film’s underperformance raises questions about the viability of Bollywood’s continued attempts to penetrate the South Indian market, especially considering the recent box office failures of similar ventures.
