Sat Apr 12 07:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Nationwide UPI Payment System Suffers Three-Hour Outage

**NEW DELHI** – India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) experienced a major disruption on [Date of Outage], causing widespread payment failures for nearly three hours. The outage, which began around 11:30 AM and peaked around 1:00 PM, impacted approximately 81% of users attempting transactions, according to Downdetector, a real-time website monitoring service. Users reported difficulties with payments (81%), fund transfers (17%), and purchases (2%).

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI system, acknowledged the issue, stating it was caused by intermittent technical problems and that they were working to resolve the situation. This marks the third such major disruption in the past 20 days.

At the height of the outage, Downdetector registered over 2400 user reports, compared to approximately 900 reports at the beginning of the disruption. By 2:30 PM, the number of reported issues had decreased significantly.

The UPI system, which allows for instant peer-to-peer payments and other financial transactions, is a cornerstone of India’s digital economy. Its recent instability raises concerns about the reliability of the system. While the NPCI has not yet released a detailed explanation for the cause of the outage, the repeated disruptions highlight the need for enhanced system resilience and redundancy. The government mandated a zero-charge framework for UPI transactions in 2020.

The incident follows a similar outage affecting Facebook and Instagram in India earlier in the week. These platforms experienced a three-hour disruption on March 25th.
