Thu Apr 10 19:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Penguin Causes Helicopter Crash in South Africa

**Gqeberha, South Africa** – A helicopter conducting an aerial survey crashed in South Africa after a penguin, being transported in an unsecured cardboard box, slid off a passenger’s lap and struck the pilot’s controls. The incident, which occurred on January 19th near Bird Island off the Eastern Cape, resulted in substantial damage to the helicopter but no injuries to the pilot, passengers, or the penguin itself.

According to a report released this week by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), the penguin, picked up from the island to be transported to Port Elizabeth, was not properly secured for the flight. The report states that the pilot conducted a risk assessment but failed to account for the transport of the unsecured penguin, violating Civil Aviation Regulations.

Approximately 15 meters above ground, the box slid, causing the helicopter to roll uncontrollably. The main rotor blades struck the ground, and the helicopter crashed.

The SACAA emphasized that the lack of proper containment for the penguin created the dangerous situation. The report highlights the importance of adhering to established safety protocols and conducting thorough risk assessments, including evaluating potential hazards such as cargo shifting. The authority stressed that the penguin’s transportation should have been in a secure crate suitable for flight conditions.
