**Mysuru, April 11, 2025** – New research highlights the potential of probiotics in managing neurodegenerative diseases such as autism, Parkinson’s syndrome, and senile dementia, according to Dr. B. Sesikeran, a nutrition expert and former Director of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). Speaking at a networking meet on probiotics and fermented foods at the Central Food Research and Training Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, Dr. Sesikeran emphasized the gut-brain connection and the role of gut bacteria in producing neurotransmitters. He noted that while modern medicine lacks definitive answers for these diseases, probiotics and their byproducts, postbiotics, offer promising avenues for management, particularly among the aging population. Dr. Sesikeran highlighted the historical emphasis on gut health in Ayurveda and ancient Greek medicine, underscoring the importance of the trillions of bacteria in maintaining overall bodily function. He also suggested that bacteria used to combat diseases could potentially replace antibiotics in the future.

The event also featured remarks from CFTRI’s chief scientist, Prakash Halami, who discussed the burgeoning functional food market, projected to reach $689.4 billion by 2030, with the probiotic market specifically reaching $105.7 billion by 2029. Halami emphasized the growing awareness of gut health and its importance in overall well-being. The event was presided over by CFTRI Director Sridevi Annapurna Singh.
