**Hyderabad, India** – A major political scandal is brewing in Telangana, with the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) accusing the Congress-led state government of orchestrating a massive Rs 10,000 crore (approximately $1.2 billion USD) land scam. The accusations, leveled by BRS leader K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), center around the redevelopment of 400 acres of land near Hyderabad Central University.
KTR alleges that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is the mastermind behind the scheme, claiming the land was illegally transferred and mortgaged to secure a loan from ICICI Bank without proper ownership verification. He further accuses the bank of compromising its credibility by approving the loan at an inflated valuation. KTR also implicated the opposition BJP, alleging a BJP MP facilitated the deal between Reddy and a private company.
The BRS claims the scam involved the state government transferring the land to the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) at a significantly undervalued rate, then mortgaging it to secure the Rs 10,000 crore loan. KTR highlighted alleged irregularities in land valuation and accusations of violating the Forest Conservation Act of 1980.
The Congress party vehemently denied the accusations, dismissing them as a diversion tactic to distract from the ruling party’s failure to meet its election promises. Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar asserted that the state government holds legitimate ownership of the land and that KTR’s claims stem from fears about the Congress’s growing popularity.
The controversy also involves ongoing protests by students and activists concerned about the redevelopment project and potential environmental damage. The Supreme Court recently issued an interim stay on any activity on the land, citing concerns about deforestation.
KTR has vowed to pursue investigations by the Reserve Bank of India, the CBI, and other federal agencies. He further suggested that a lack of action by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would indicate a conspiracy between the BJP and Congress. The unfolding events promise a protracted political battle in Telangana.
