**New York, NY** – Aspiring Staten Island Ferry pilots are undergoing rigorous training in a state-of-the-art simulator, ensuring the safe passage of thousands of daily commuters. The three-day “Bridge Resource Management” course utilizes a high-tech simulator that replicates real-world conditions, including varied weather, wave action, and heavy harbor traffic.

The simulator, which has been in operation for three years, allows trainees – mates and assistant captains – to hone their teamwork and decision-making skills in a safe environment. Deputy Mayor for Operations Jeffrey Roth recently visited the training center, highlighting the city’s investment in the safety and expertise of its ferry personnel. “That’s a big investment in our people…moving thousands of people across the harbor and that’s one way that we keep the city of New York and New Yorkers safe,” Roth stated.

Captain John Garvey, Deputy Commissioner of the City Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division, emphasized the simulator’s realism, stating it provides “excellent training” that closely mirrors the experience of navigating the harbor. He explained that the course focuses on improving team management within the pilothouse, leading to enhanced efficiency and safety.

The training program underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Staten Island Ferry, a vital part of New York City’s transportation system.
