**New Delhi, India** – Tahawwur Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) upon his arrival in Delhi. Rana, accused of playing a key role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, faces charges of criminal conspiracy, waging war against India, murder, forgery, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Rana’s arrest follows his extradition from the United States, approved two months ago by President Donald Trump. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde lauded the extradition on X (formerly Twitter).
The NIA presented Rana before a special court, citing strong evidence, including emails, to support their request for police custody. The agency stated that custodial interrogation is crucial to fully unravel the conspiracy behind the attacks.
Rana is alleged to have provided logistical and financial support to David Coleman Headley, the prime accused in the Mumbai attacks. According to the chargesheet, Rana assisted Headley in various ways, including establishing an immigration law firm in Mumbai that served as a cover for reconnaissance trips across India.
In 2009, Rana was arrested in the US for aiding a planned attack on a Danish newspaper and providing support to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group responsible for the Mumbai attacks. He was convicted in 2011 but appealed against extradition to India, citing various health concerns. These appeals were ultimately unsuccessful.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks, which lasted three days, targeted several locations including hotels, a train station, and the Chabad House, resulting in 166 deaths. While Pakistan has distanced itself from Rana, citing his lack of renewed Pakistani documents and his Canadian citizenship, India maintains its case against him for his alleged complicity in this devastating act of terrorism. Rana is expected to be transferred to Mumbai to face trial, potentially at the high-security Tihar Jail in Delhi.
