Wed Apr 09 08:59:59 UTC 2025: ## Death Toll Rises to 98 After Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse
**SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic** – The death toll from a nightclub roof collapse in the Dominican Republic has climbed to 98, officials confirmed early Wednesday. The tragedy occurred at the popular Jet Set nightclub during a concert shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Rescuers are continuing to sift through the rubble, but hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling more than 24 hours after the incident.
Among the victims is renowned Dominican merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was performing on stage at the time of the collapse, according to his manager. The club, which had a capacity of 700 seated and 1,000 standing, was reportedly overcrowded at the time of the incident.
Over 370 rescue personnel are working tirelessly to clear the debris, consisting of fallen bricks, steel bars, and tin sheets. Dozens of ambulances transported the injured to hospitals, while distraught family members gathered outside the venue anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
The initial death toll was reported as 15, but the number tragically increased throughout Tuesday. Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the Emergency Operations Centre, stated that rescue efforts will continue as long as there is a possibility of finding survivors. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation.
