Wed Apr 09 09:31:47 UTC 2025: **Mantralayam Mutt Bans Solo Pilgrims from Accommodation**
MANTRALAYAM, Andhra Pradesh – Solo pilgrims are being barred from securing accommodation near the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Mantralayam, creating hardship for those traveling to the religious site. The restriction, in effect for some time, applies to both the mutt’s 1,100 rooms and nearby private lodges.
According to a mutt spokesperson, the ban was implemented following incidents of missing persons and suicides among solo travelers, prompting police intervention and requests for increased identification verification. The mutt’s website clearly states that single-person reservations will be canceled.
The ban has led to difficulties for pilgrims like Sachin Rai, who traveled from Bengaluru and struggled to find lodging. Many unaware devotees are forced to sleep outdoors. The situation is reportedly being exploited by touts who charge inflated prices to stranded pilgrims.
While the mutt maintains the policy is for safety, Karnataka’s Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy expressed surprise at the restriction and promised to investigate the Karnataka State Choultry’s role in the matter. The issue highlights the challenges faced by solo travelers visiting religious sites and the potential for exploitation.
