**Kochi, April 8, 2025** – The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed strong displeasure at the Kerala government’s delayed response to the devastating Wayanad landslides of July 30, 2024, threatening to summon the Chief Secretary if reports on the disaster aren’t submitted promptly.
The Southern Bench of the NGT, which initiated proceedings based on a *The Hindu* report, noted the lack of response from key authorities, including the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, which has yet to file its report. An order issued on March 28, 2025, highlights the crucial need for this report to understand the causes of the disaster. The District Collectors of Idukki and Wayanad have also failed to provide necessary information.
The NGT’s order, issued by Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and Satyagopal Korlapati, expressed concern over the lack of timely response given the significant loss of life. Unless the reports detailing the causes of the disaster and preventative measures are submitted by the June 20, 2025 hearing, the Chief Secretary will be summoned to appear before the tribunal.
The tribunal also criticized the delayed submission of reports from the Forest and Wildlife Department and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, which were only filed in March 2025, despite an earlier directive from September 27, 2024. The NGT’s stern warning underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability in addressing the aftermath of the Wayanad landslides.
