TIRUNELVELI, Tamil Nadu – April 8, 2025 – The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) has emerged as the leading medical college hospital in Tamil Nadu for organ donation, harvesting 21 livers and 41 kidneys from 24 donors between 2019 and April 5, 2025. This achievement follows the hospital’s third-place ranking in 2023-2024.
Dean C. Revathi Balan attributed the success to a dedicated team of doctors who work closely with donor families, often engaging in extensive conversations to secure consent. Dr. Balan highlighted the challenging nature of this process, emphasizing the importance of their efforts in providing life-saving organs to patients in need.
The hospital’s organ harvesting program, active since 2019, faced a setback during the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this disruption, TVMCH has already harvested 25 organs (including 10 kidneys and 5 livers) in 2024-2025. These organs are distributed to hospitals across southern and central Tamil Nadu. The hospital’s success underscores its commitment to organ donation and its significant contribution to improving patient outcomes across the state.
