Jalandhar, Punjab – A suspected grenade blast outside the residence of senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia in Jalandhar early Tuesday morning has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the law and order situation in Punjab. The explosion, which occurred around 1 a.m., caused significant damage but resulted in no injuries.
Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed that an investigation is underway, with forensic teams collecting evidence and examining CCTV footage. While the police are awaiting forensic confirmation, Mr. Kalia himself described the incident as feeling like a grenade blast. Security has been heightened across the district.
Opposition parties have strongly condemned the attack and blamed the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for failing to maintain law and order. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, cited the incident as the latest in a series of attacks, including the Mohali RPG attack in 2022 and grenade attacks on police stations in late 2024, demanding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s resignation. Similar calls for the CM’s resignation came from Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema, who termed the attack a “big conspiracy”. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu also criticized the state government’s response, stating the attack represents a failure to maintain security. The investigation continues.
