NEW YORK, NY – Zelle, the popular peer-to-peer payment app, has officially discontinued its standalone application, effective Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The company announced the closure months ago, citing the overwhelming preference of users to access Zelle’s services through their own bank’s mobile app.
Only 2% of Zelle’s 151 million users were still utilizing the standalone app for cash transfers. The app will remain accessible until August 11th, but users can no longer send or receive money. Instead, they are directed to utilize Zelle’s services integrated into the over 2,200 banks and credit unions that support the platform. The app will transition into a consumer education platform and directory for those banks.
This move isn’t unexpected, with Zelle stating in October 2024 that the widespread integration of Zelle into banking apps made the standalone app largely redundant. The majority of users will experience no disruption to their Zelle usage as a result of this change.
