**Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh:** A shocking incident in Gwalior has left a man and his elderly mother fearing for their lives after a brutal assault by his wife and her family. Vishal Batra, a car spare shop owner, and his 70-year-old mother, Sarla Batra, allege that their in-laws violently attacked them, culminating in the daughter-in-law, Neelika, assaulting Sarla Batra.
The incident, captured on CCTV footage, shows Neelika dragging and punching her mother-in-law, who was attempting to protect her son from an attack by Neelika’s father, Surendra Kohli, and brother, Nanak Kohli, and other unidentified men. The assault allegedly stemmed from a dispute over sending Sarla Batra to an old-age home, a suggestion Neelika reportedly insisted on.
The violence spilled onto the streets, with Vishal Batra also suffering a brutal beating. The couple’s young son was present throughout the incident, witnessing the assault on his mother and father. Sarla Batra sustained a swollen eye during the attack.
The family has filed a complaint with the police, alleging threats of murder from Neelika and her family. Vishal Batra stated that his in-laws subsequently took control of his house, reportedly worth crores of rupees, locking him and his mother out. He expresses fear for their safety, drawing parallels to the recent gruesome Meerut murder case where a man was murdered and dismembered by his wife and her lover.
While the police initially appeared hesitant to act, an FIR has since been filed. Following intervention at the Superintendent of Police’s office, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vishal Batra assured the family of swift action. Neelika and her father have not yet commented publicly on the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
