Sun Apr 06 07:46:22 UTC 2025: ## Verstappen Wins Thrilling Japanese Grand Prix, Closes Championship Gap

**Suzuka, Japan** – Max Verstappen secured a dramatic pole-to-flag victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, his first win of the 2025 season, edging out a hard-charging Lando Norris and claiming his 64th career Grand Prix win. The Red Bull driver crossed the finish line 1.5 seconds ahead of Norris, who held off his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri for third place.

The race, held on a damp but drying Suzuka circuit, saw a thrilling battle between Verstappen and the McLaren duo. Verstappen’s win, his fourth consecutive in Japan, narrowed the championship lead to a single point, with Norris now on 62 points and Verstappen on 61. Piastri sits third with 49 points.

The race wasn’t without incident. A controversial moment saw Norris briefly forced off track by Verstappen during a pit stop sequence. While Norris claimed Verstappen forced him onto the grass, Verstappen countered that Norris was at fault, and stewards chose not to investigate further.

Eighteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, briefly led the race while the frontrunners pitted, becoming Formula One’s youngest ever race leader. However, Verstappen quickly retook the lead and held it to the finish.

Despite facing challenges earlier in the season, Verstappen secured pole position with a track-record qualifying lap, setting the stage for his victory. He praised his performance, acknowledging the pressure from the McLarens but ultimately celebrating a hard-fought win. Norris, while disappointed, put up a strong challenge throughout the race. The race was initially threatened by rain, but the track dried out, delivering a gripping contest for the fans. Yuki Tsunoda also competed in his first race for Red Bull, finishing 12th.
