**Tel Aviv, April 6, 2025** – Israel has significantly escalated its military operation in Gaza, deploying troops to a newly established security corridor aimed at further isolating the Hamas militant group. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the “Morag Corridor,” which Israeli media reports depict as stretching across the width of the Gaza Strip, effectively severing southern Gaza from the rest of the territory. This follows the establishment of similar corridors in the north and south, effectively dividing Gaza into isolated sections.
The move comes as pressure mounts on Hamas to release the remaining 59 hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack. Netanyahu stated the corridor’s purpose is to increase pressure to secure the hostages’ release. The Israeli Defense Minister has previously indicated plans to annex large swathes of Gaza into Israeli-controlled “security zones.”
The escalation follows a recent breakdown in ceasefire talks and a renewed Israeli offensive that has resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel claims to have killed around 20,000 militants. The ongoing blockade of Gaza, including the cutoff of essential supplies like food, fuel, and humanitarian aid, has drawn criticism from rights groups who claim it constitutes a war crime.
Hamas has steadfastly refused to relinquish the hostages without the release of Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The conflict continues to cause immense suffering, with much of Gaza devastated and its residents repeatedly displaced. Families of the hostages are increasingly desperate, accusing Netanyahu of prioritizing the deaths of the hostages over their rescue.
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump on Monday for a second time since January. While the US has acted as a mediator in past ceasefire attempts, it has also supported Israel’s military actions. A previous proposal by Trump to permanently resettle displaced Palestinians outside Gaza was met with strong criticism from Palestinians, Arab nations, and human rights organizations. The current conflict is the deadliest in the history of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
